
Photographer, Jay Dusard, joined “The Legacy of the California Vaquero” film crew in October during the first production shoot of EISF’s latest high definition documentary. As a still photographer at the shoot, Jay captured black and white photographs, as well as color photography, of the vaqueros, in addition to the behind the scenes action.
Recognized globally for his black and white photographs of the working cowboys and landscapes of the American West, Jay studied and taught with Ansel Adams and Frederick Sommer. A 1981 Guggenheim Fellowship, a shared Pulitzer Prize nomination, various book awards and a Kodak World Image Award for Fine Art Photography nomination are among Jay’s accomplishments.
Jay has also published “The North American Cowboy: A Portrait”, “La Frontera”, “Beyond the Rangeland Conflict: Toward a West that Works”, “Open Country” and “Horses.” His limited edition portfolio of twelve digital prints, The California Vaquero, published by Cattle Track Press, is additionally a coveted commodity amongst collectors. Not at all new to the film industry either, Jay was a still photographer for “The Horse Whisperer” and the subject of a documentary, “Jay Dusard: Keeping the West Western.” Among numerous venues, Jay’s work has been exhibited at the Phoenix Art Museum, Glenbow Museum (Calgary), Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Consejo Mexicano de Fotografia (Mexico City), Art Museum of South Texas, Booth Western Art Museum (Atlanta) and the International Photography Hall of Fame (Oklahoma City).
Jay has more than an affinity for the cowboys, vaqueros and buckaroos of the west; he actually lives the lifestyle and has for over forty years. Jay and his wife, Kathie live near Douglas, Arizona, with their horses and Jay, when not working on his photography, is frequently horseback help on several local ranches.
