"Painting" the Channel Islands at Morseburg Galleries

The EISF team continued its production of the Channel Islands documentary in May 2008 with a week of varied locations and subjects, including those of an entirely different stroke involving some of California's finest painters, such as David Gallup. As one example, a high definition shoot with the extraordinary Sony F 23 camera occurred at the Morseburg Galleries in West Hollywood, California for the Channel Islands multi-media exhibition and HD documentary. Interviews with David Gallup, painter, Dennis Cabral, collector, and Jeff Morseburg, gallery owner, were shot, along with numerous Channel Islands paintings by Gallup. The gallery, located in a turn-of-the-century building, formerly owned by Charlie Chaplan, is one of Southern California's most established galleries and the oldest family-owned art establishment in Los Angeles. Cinematography literally means “lighting in movement”. It is often referred to as painting with light. The cinematographer on a film has a wide range of options when it comes to selecting how the film will be shot and how the “look” of the film will be determined. The use of tonality, speed of motion and perspective are included in these variables, as is lighting. The Sony F 23 CineAlta high definition camera increases those choices even further in extending the palette of rich color saturation, variable frame rates and many other cinematic aspects.
